Echo Park Rising: The land of booze, sweat, and local tunes by some of the city's hottest rising acts and accomplished stars who paved their path to success within its borders. Over the weekend, shops and restaurants turned into venue spaces to host artists known and new. We caught up with a few of our favorite acts to chat favorite spots, best shows, and what they would name their own pocket of the world.

Superhumanoids

Where's your favorite place to go in Echo Park and why?
El Compadre for the vagabundo and the blended flaming margarita. Its affordable, delicious, and it makes you feel all the right types of good.

What's the best local show you've been to?
Cass McCombs at The Echo in 2011 — he had a wall of small lights behind him that would go in and out slowly, it was a trip.

Your band is bequeathed a nameless country by a far-off king. What do you call it and what will your flag look like?
Sarah's Playhouse. The flag is an editable rectangle of goat cheese with an emblem of a wine bottle in the center..

Where's your favorite place to go in Echo Park and why?

Julie: Two Boots pizza cuz Night Tripper pizza. Love the song. Love the pizza.
Lindsey: Stories. It’s the Peach Pit of Echo Park, but with books.

What's your favorite show you've been to locally (in Echo Park)? (Can be at a venue or house party)

Julie: Fool's Gold's residency at The Echo back in 2008. That was a seriously epic and vibe-elevating month.
Lindsey: Savages at the Echo. They’re the Sparta of bands. Those bitches will knock you out with one swift blow.

Your band is bequeathed a nameless country by a far-off king. What do you call it and what will your flag look like? (Feel free to send a drawing if desired)

Julie: Vagidonia. The flag is a pink circle on a red background. The coat of arms is two tampons crossed. One slightly used.

Where's your favorite place to go in Echo Park and why?
The fruitas frescas cart in the parking lot of the gas station on Glendale and Temple. 7 days a week. Precious fruits, even coconut. Grab a bag of fruit, walk to the park, pick some lotus flowers. It's a good day.

What's the best local show you've been to?
Deerhoof at the Echoplex. Their drummer Greg got up at the end of the show and gave a speech about how great it was to play that night. It was the most sincere thing we've seen on stage.

Your band is bequeathed a nameless country by a far-off king. What do you call it and what will your flag look like?

Spooky had a kingdom once when he was 4 years old. He was the King. It was called Matador. He was the King of Matador. If we were to gain a country, it would probably be that one, as he is the rightful owner. The flag is the annunciation of the Unicorn from the Book of Hours.

Where's your favorite place to go in Echo Park and why?
My favorite place in Echo Park is either Stories because books+tea+magical outdoor space, or Elysian Park because its basically like Jurassic Park minus the dinosaurs.

What's the best local show you've been to?
My favorite show I've seen in Echo Park....this is a hard one because I've seen lot of great shows here. Basically anything at Part Time Punks is good.

Your band is bequeathed a nameless country by a far-off king. What do you call it and what will your flag look like?
The third question is my favorite, and I definitely just spent half an hour trying to design a flag haha. Our land would be called dræmland. (Duh.)

Part Time Punks at the Echo

What's the best local show you've been to?
Ride was the best show we saw (at the Fox Theater in Pomona). Even though it wasn't a local show per say, it felt like it because everyone was there.

Where's your favorite place to go in Echo Park and why?
The park! I love to feel like I can escape yet be close to home. I'll go the park to walk around, lay down and listen to music and hang out with my friends.

What's the best local show you've been to?
Sarah Records Nite at a Part Time Punks show this year. A band formed just for that night to cover classic Sarah Records' tunes. It was so unique to experience a band that only existed for a night!

Winter-Wonderland. A flag sprinkled with mini marshmallows, candy canes, stars, and guitars.
